Brushing Habits to Stay Away From

Posted .

Brushing is a very important task that should always be included in your oral hygiene routine. However, that doesn’t mean the task is always helpful. In fact, there are brushing habits you can participate in that do more harm than good. It’s best to avoid these habits so you can properly and effectively care for your smile. Our prosthodontist, Dr. Ben B. Ross, is happy to help you do so by listing the habits here:

-Brushing with a hard-bristled toothbrush: The hard bristles on the toothbrush tend to wear down the tooth enamel and irritate the oral tissues. This makes the smile weak and it makes the gums pull away from the teeth. This can cause extreme tooth sensitivity.

-Brushing too hard: This can also weaken the tooth enamel and bug the gums. It’s important to only use light to moderate pressure when brushing. You don’t need to brush hard to remove all of the harmful substances from your smile.

-Brushing too long: This has the same consequences of brushing with a hard-bristled toothbrush and brushing too long. It’s very important to brush for two minutes each time.
